A 1.5 native plugin enabling you to display section or category descriptions within content. This is a very simple, single purpose plugin that does only and exactly what it claims. On occassion, an article may wish to include the description from a section or category. Copying that description means it may need to be updated in multiple places if changes are made. With this plugin, just update the section/category description and all of the articles remain current.

Installation

Download the latest version of the plugin here

Install via the standard Joomla interface

Enable the plugin

Minimal parameters may be set by clicking the plugin in the Plugin Manager

Basic usage (either the catid or the secid, not both, is required)

{ggis-scdesc catid=”10″} or
{ggis-scdesc secid=”10″}

Example of usage with parameters

Module ggis-tabnews is a module developed for Joomla 1.5. Basically, it takes all articles in a category or section and outputs them to a tabbed box. It depends on the Joomla Works Tabs & Slides plugin for the tabbing javascript. A future release may remove that dependency.

Where to get it?

This is currently not a public release but if you are interested in it, please drop a comment on this article.

Expected Usage

This module was developed for a very specific usage and has not been developed or tested beyond that. I do however, see a wide variety of applications for this module. A client wished to display offsite class locations by county in a tabbed box. Additionally; the person editing the locations, while familiar with the basic editor interface on the front-end, was not expected to handle much complexity in layout.

Structural setup

Create a section named Section Locations

Create categories under Section Locations for each class type, ie.

Category Lifeguarding Locations

Category Lifeguarding Instructor Locations

Category Water Safety Instructor Locations

Under each category, create an article for each county listing that county’s offsite class locations, ie.

Article Dane County

Article Dodge County

Article Milwaukee County

Article Waukesha County

Control the display of the county articles by setting the publish flag

The outline of the above should be similar to:

Section Locations

Category Lifeguarding Locations

Article Dane County

Article Dodge County

Article Milwaukee County

Article Waukesha County

Category Lifeguarding Instructor Locations

Article Dane County

Article Dodge County

Article Milwaukee County

Article Waukesha County

Category Water Safety Instructor Locations

Article Dane County

Article Dodge County

Article Milwaukee County

Article Waukesha County

Make it easy for the editor

Add a menu item to the user’s menu that links directly to Section Locations

This gives the editor easy access to the offsite class locations articles

Using the module

Use the mod_ggis-tabnews module that pulls all articles in a category and properly formats and outputs them

Make a copy of the module for each category

For the example’s case, 3 copies

Rename the copies

Tabbed Lifeguarding

Tabbed Lifeguard Instructor

Tabbed Water Safety Instructor

Assign each copy a unique position. This is easily done by typing your unique position into the Postion dropdown when editing the module.

lifeguard_locations

lifeguardinstructor_locations

watersafetyinstructor_locations

Set the module’s parameters as appropriate. Especially set either the Section ID or the Category ID.

Displaying the module

For the example, the module is intended to display in an article. That is why a unique, non-templated position was used in step 4 above. Modules may displaye
d in any article using Joomla’s loadposition plugin. In our example, there are 3 descriptive articles titled;

Lifeguarding

Lifeguard Instructor

Water Safety Instructor

To display the module in the Lifeguarding article, include the plugin text where you wish the module to appear.

(loadposition lifeguard_locations}

Setup

Using ggis_iframe is a very simple matter of performing a short setup and then inserting a simple code in your article.

Download and install plugin using standard means. Download here.

There are really no plugin options to set, everything is controlled by the insert tag.

Publish the ggis_iframe plugin

Usage

The subscription form may be inserted on a post, page, or text widget by including the following code in your text.

{ggis_iframe %param0="val" %param1="val"}

http://iframe.url{/ggis_iframe}

The insert tag starts with {ggis_iframe} and ends with {/ggis_iframe}. A number of parameters may be set in the openning tag. The URL of the iframe to insert goes between the tags.

Another example with all parameters set:

{ggis_iframe id="mine" width="100%" height="650"
frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true"
scrolling="auto"}http://mydomain.com/page{/ggis_iframe}

Parameters

id – identifies your iframe (text)

default = random number

width -sets the iframe width (% or px)

default = 100%

height – sets iframe height (% or px)

default = 650px

frameborder – border width around iframe (low integer)

default = 0

allowtransparency – iframe background transparency (true or false)

default = true

scrolling – set iframe scrolling (auto, yes, or no)

default = auto

On occasion, I am asked to set up online ticket sales for various clients. This is usually for a client that does not have an online store for other products. Sometimes the client wishes to highlight or feature the event as well.

There are many services available to help you sell your tickets online. All that I have found charge a fee. For many of my clients, holding small events, these fees make the service cost-prohibitive. Instead, they choose to go with a self-hosted and processed solution that relies on their current capabilities. This leaves the possibilities nearly endless for a developer like me.

Here, I review the information needed to start developing online ticket sales for small clients with special events. This information could also be applied to larger clients, though it may be appropriate to develop a more robust online store that includes the ability to sell tickets.

Gather your information

Regardless of the feature set, the flashiness, or the look and feel of the ticket sale; the developer needs certain information from the client. The information I have found most useful in my development includes:

Enumerated sales options

Event information

Delivery options

Purchase limitations

Required transaction data

Seller’s story

Narrow the options

What other ticket purchase options are there

How will charges be handled

If it is for a nonprofit, what is ticket value

Sales starting and ending dates

Host requirements

Language requirements

Site integration requirements

Seller’s Story

Information about the ticket sale that will help sell the ticket or that the seller wishes the buyer to know. This is not needed for the transaction but is very helpful for the style, layout, and additional content.

As an example consider this paragraph.

“We are pleased to announce an outstanding donation from Local Music Promoter, the organization responsible for bringing great music acts to the city every year. Local Music Promoter is providing Our Organization with YYY tickets to sell at face value with 100 percent of sales going directly to Our Organization. This one-of-a-kind benefit has resulted from a long-standing and unique relationship between the two organizations.”

Conclusion

This should cover most of the information needed to develop the clients’ special event online ticket sales. If there are special circumstances or requirements that the client may have, they are very likely to inform you of those needs upfront.
