Sitting in the Shelter

If it has seemed a little quiet from me of late, its because I have spent the last week or so working with the American Red Cross on the disaster response to the floods in Milwaukee. Basically, I have been running back and forth to the shelter (which still has 20+ residents) and then doing paperwork and management tasks in between.

Once that is done, I knock off as many of my daily tasks as I can. Usually, that means I am running a little behind on my daily task list (who isn’t?). So for my clients, a big thank you for your patience in any delays in addressing your tickets. For my family a big thank you for dealing with my earlier than normal wake up hours and very unruly schedule. To my friends, I’ll catch up with you next week.

I regularly develop GPL open source plugins, modules, and widgets for Joomla and WordPress. On ocassion, a users has asked if a donation would help support this development. The comment alone is a great compliment and incentive. Cash is always greatly appreciated but in this case, if you find one of my plugins useful please make a donation to one of these great organizations instead.

Accelerating Red Cross Service Delivery – Part I

I was recently involved in various phases of the Red Cross response to tornadoes in Kenosha County. While overall things flowed well and all of our service delivery goals were met, there are certainly areas for improvement. Here, I identify four areas for improvement. The improvements are mostly in speeding the delivery of initial services.

The identified areas are 1) Sheltering, 2) Disaster Assessment, 3) Mobile Feeding, and 4) Bulk Distribution. Additionally, it is my opinion that Staff Services must be involved in the early phases of the response.

Gifts of Stock or Other Securities

Donations of stocks or other securities benefit both the donor and the non profit. The nonprofit gains another avenue to accepting donations and these are potentially large donations. The donor receives the donation tax benefits of the appreciated security without the capital gains hit from the appreciated security.
